The Group of Calorimetry in Adsorption and Catalysis was organized in
1985 in the framework of the Department of Chemical Kinetics and
Catalysis (which was guided by Prof.
Anatoly I. Gel'bshtein) and was reorganized in 1992 to the
Sector
of Calorimetry in Adsorption and Catalysis in the framework of the
Department of Physical Kinetics (which is guided by Prof. Victor K. Potapov).
Since its organization in 1985, the Sector has been guided by Dr. Victor E. Ostrovskii .
Ostrovskii V.E., 2000
(In 1960-1985, Calorimetry was developed by V. E. Ostrovskii in the
Laboratory of Chemical Kinetics guided by Prof. Mikhail I. Temkin; the start
of these works was initiated by Dr.
Kul'kova N.V.)
At the first stage of our calorimetric and adsorption works, we were
facing the scientific and engineering problems of designing the
workable instrumentation and theoretic basis and of resolution of the
issue whether there are sufficient proof to contend that surfaces
reveal themselves as the heterogeneous ones in chemisorption and
catalytic processes.
In due course, the area of scientific interests of the members of the
Sector was extended.
Fields of
Scientific Activity:
Fundamental problems of catalysis and adsorption
Application of calorimetric and adsorption techniques and
theoretical approaches to clarification of the mechanisms and kinetics
of chemical processes of the following types:
redox heterogeneous catalytic reactions (syntheses of NH3
from elements, CH3OH from hydrogen and carbon oxides, H2
from carbon oxide and water, C2H4O from ethylene
and oxygen, H2O from hydrogen and oxygen, etc) and
chemisorption at metals and oxides;
catalytic polymerization of ethylene, 1,4-butadiene, ethylene
oxide, etc in gas-solid systems with no solvent ;
physical adsorption of gases and vapors at polymers and coal;
water sorption by monomers and polymers, such as
polyacrylamide, acrylamide, aminoacids and DNA;
Earlier studies of kinetics of C2H4O
production and promotion of Ag-catalysts.
Fields of
Activity in Scientific
Instrumentation and Methodology
Development of calorimetric instrument-making and methodology;
Development of adsorption techniques and methodology.

Training,
Calorimetry-Propagation, and Scientific-Organizational Activity
In our group, post-graduate students Glazunova L.D., Diatlov A.A., Dobrovol'skii N.N., Igranova E.G., and Khodzhemirov V.A. performed their
scientific works and successfully defended the theses; several tens of
graduate-students from the Moscow, Tomsk, and Ekaterinburg State
Universities, Moscow Physical and Technical Institute, and Moscow
Institute of Thin Chemical Technology performed their scientific works
in our group, basing on the calorimetric techniques and procedures; we
rendered assistance in organization of calorimetric groups and in
training of their members in scientific centers of the Former Soviet
Union;
Calorimeters designed by us were repeatedly exhibited at the
All-Union National-Economy-Progress Exhibition; they were
commercialized in the Former Soviet Union by the Severodonetsk
Instrumental Plant (now, it is Ukrainian territory); in the Former
Soviet Union, V.E. Ostrovskii
was the organizer of calorimetric instrumentation-making in the
structure of the Ministry of Chemical Industry;
We initiated serial scientific All-Union conference "Calorimetry
in Adsorption and Catalysis" and were its active organizers and
participated in organization of serial All-Union Conference on
Adsorption Calorimetry.
